Any golfer that plays seriously should have some level of golf insurance. If you are wondering why you need it, it is surprising the number of golfers that are not insured specifically for the game they play. Sure, your normal life insurance policy will cover you if the unthinkable happens on the course, but would your medical insurance cover you for injury, or your home insurance pay out for clubs lost or damaged at the course?

A specialized golf insurance policy will cover you for everything to do with golf at a lot lower cost than if you took out a general insurance to cover you for the same eventualities. You might think that golf is a reasonably safe game to play, assuming that you avoid being hit by a ball, but there is more to golf insurance than just protecting against a wayward shot.
Here are some of the things you should be considering.

Research has indicated that over 90% of golfers are not adequately insured for these eventualities, and are leaving themselves open to having to pay for hospital treatment and restitution of property, of both their own and that of others.
Golf is known as being a potentially expensive game to play, but that cost can rise dramatically if you do not have personal liability insurance, and are not insured for personal injury, damage to property and loss of, or damage to, your golfing equipment. The poorer the player you are, the more at risk you are, and the same is true the more you play. The type of person most at risk of having to make personal liability pay-outs are very keen beginners, so make sure that you are sufficiently insured.
You can also be insured against loss of personal effects at a golf club, and can insure against damage to or loss of your clubs, golf bag and travel case, your balls (golf), cart and even your umbrella. You can insure specifically for death or loss of limbs or sight, as well as for general medical expenses for injuries. Some insurers even allow you to insure yourself against expenses incurred in the case of a hole in one!
You can also get insure to cover your litigation costs in the event that you are taken to court for injuring another person and decide to fight the case. If somebody wanders across the fairway after you have driven your ball, and walks into your ball with their head, then you can argue that you are not liable. Your insurance will cover your attorney's costs.
This is of particular importance if you are a competition player, in which case you have more than just other players to consider. You have spectators, caddies, officials and volunteers, and also anything that occurs on the practice ranges. Even if claims against you are groundless, you might still have the cost of the investigation to bear.
Quite frankly, if you play golf regularly rather than just during your summer or winter vacation, you should have some form of insurance. Many golfers assume wrongly that their standard household insurance will cover them, but it will not. Common sense dictates that golfers are more at risk of golfing injuries, and of causing them, than non-golfers, so are obviously going to have to pay extra for that type of coverage.
Golf insurance is a necessity for most golfers, and you are well advised to get some unless you are prepared to and can afford to meet the costs of injury or loss yourself.
